"Agh, this is going nowhere. Let's go home shall we?" Ringget asked Loracius. "It's not like we're going to find anything out soon about this stupid piece of paper, it's not even giving us the slightest clue." He was getting heavily dispirited. He rid himself of the feeling of uselessness by chucking some beer down his throat, cleaning up his mouth with the back of his hand afterwards.
"Spit that out will ya, it's poison. If you really want to kill yourself, then get working again. This scroll won't translate itself on its own ya know!" Loracius threw back at him, eying Rinnget up. He had curly hair that was spinning out like a boll of wool, a fuzzy chin from working too long and shaving too little and worst of all, were his eyes. His eyes were both black and white, with little bags below them from sleep deprivation.
"Oh well, you go lie down then, you look like a ghost came back from the dead to haunt this laboratory. If you really want, you can go home, but I won't fill your hours ok?" Loracius added, loosening up himself.
They hadn't been able to get anywhere anytime soon with that particular scroll. Some people had described it some magical powers that only became apparent if it could be read. Age and overuse had withered it to a papyrus feel, brown and strained. On it were written long texts in strange symbols.
For over a thousand years people had tried to translate the scroll. All tried and failed. It's up to you and your friends now to decypher the runic pages of this ancient script and delve deep into the secrets of old. If luck will chance you to read it, you might be brought back to old stories and old times ... enjoy.
You heard me, make your own characters to step into the story and try to unriddle this strange leaf. Try to get to know eachother first and try to make little stories. You can modify a lot in this forum, so it'd like you to stick with the story. Eventually this thread might end up different then it'd expected, but i'll just let it run clear . I'll try to provide clues and riddles for you. It's difficult to try and have a plot in RP, but i'll try to make it comfortable.
Enjoy! Try to give a summary of your character at first, some biography. I'll wait for somebody to step in and do or Loracius or Ringget, I don't want to do two .

Nice! I'll get a char in!
Nick: Solar. Real name: Hiyamoto Kiriniko.
This guy was born from 2 Europeans, but when he was still a baby, they flew to Japan, where the plane crashed. The only survivor was the baby, and he was cared for by a nice old couple.
There he grew up and became strong, and since his old name was lost, he gained a new one: Hiyamoto Kiriniko. He also got a nickname: Solar, for he was (nearly) always good-natured.
In his youth, he began learning how to use the sword, an art he has now mastered quite well, though he still has a lot to learn. After all, the Friendly Sun Dojo didn't have the best masters in the entire world!
This guy is now in his teens, 15/16 years old. He's free from school for some reason, though no-one knows which one. He sometimes studies other languages, since he likes to be able to understand others.
You could say he's the general cool guy, being good-natured, and always walking around with his sword (Varscona, has no real special powers (yet)), and often also with a dangerous-looking rifle. After all, this world can be hard and cruel...
More data may be added later... Right now, I haven't got much time so...
Let's hope this RP thread stays! ;D

I'll take up the role of Rinnget or Loracius, I don't mind. I'll take whoever you don't want to be.
You'll have to give me some back info though. Or their motivation will be power and they'll sound identical to Kaiser...

Some more weapon info...
Ok, right now I got a NORMAL sword... I'll find Varscona somewhere on the way...
Cause I'm to lazy to remove the discription...
Varscona is a nicely ornamented sword, even having a (blue) gem in its hilt. It was given to him after he passed his "test". If Can anyone help me with getting a pic for it?
My rifle is a cool-looking rifle, unlike the average one. For those that know Septerra core, it looks like Maya's rifle. A shame I can't find and buy the game anywhere...
Anyhow, it has a leather handle, and is multi-functional. For one, it can fire seperate shots, it can shoot at a high rate of fire, and can be modified to use other attacks, like shooting small grenades, and making it able to use as a sniper rifle. At the moment it only has the most basic ways of using though... Only seperate shots and small "bursts" of shots (several bullets fired at nearly the same time).
Appearence: Normal size, a slightly thin looking boy, who's face is most of the time happy and still quite serious looking at the same time. He's got purple hair, which is relativly long.
I think that's all for now... As soon as I know where those 2 guys could be found, I'm ready to join the RP!

Well, I'll be wanting to play Ringget while Kaiser volonteered for Loracius (hehe, I made him of course ).
Seems we got the story back on track people. I'll be giving you some details, the scroll (with all the riddles ) and the lead further on, have to develop the scroll some more.

More waiting! It better be worth it!
Ah well... We still need more members, and RPers! *Meanwhile, Solar is practising his sword skills on a dummy made of straw, out of pure boredom...* And where ever he is, he's near those two guys...

I guess I can join...
Name: Ethan Clarke
Age: 25 Height: 197 cm
Description: Ethan is a special case. For one, he is nearly 2 metres tall and apparently noone knows how to pronounce his name properly, save for himself. He has an air of stoic calmness and independance surrounding him, as the result of a rather unusual decision after high school; Going to China to study Shaolin Kung Fu. Ethan travels far and wide whereever he pleases, with a general interest for most things culture-like, and with a determination not to end up another salary-slave, as is the case with most western-civilization adults. Which it should be, according to Ethan, since he agrees with Plato on this one: People are dumb. Right now, his aimless wandering has led him to... wherever it is Ringett and Loracious are...

*Attacking quite fast, Solar is still cutting the dummie down with his sword out of pure boredom...* Hmm... Perhaps I should use [glow=red,2,300]Power Strike![/glow] *Takes his arm back, and tenses his muscles...* *Aims while the power in his arm is building...* *Suddenly the sword flies forward, and the dummie is smashed to pieces...* Heh! Simple!
Power strike is a basic abiltity which takes a little time to prepare, before a faster, more accurate and more power blow is delivered to the target. Still, it can't be used constantly, as it's quite tiring, and in fast battles, the decrease in speed can mean death...
Now, what target should I take? *looks around...*
Where are they?

I might as well join in...
Name: Jack Harris Age: 24
Motivations: Jack is currently undertaking a PhD in social development and its links to mythologies. He believes that most mythologies have a basis in fact, and actually describe real events (although garnished with exaggeration). Something of a polymath, he applies a variety of disciplines to the activity. He has recently decided that an excellent way to finish his thesis would be finding the sociological roots to the 'Scroll of the Elders', which he believes will likely hold sociological or technological secrets that could seem like magic to an impressionable society. The implications from the fact that it remains undeciphered haven't occurred to him in any great depth.
Jack isn't terribly good at working alongside others on a problem; although he is not terribly disagreeable or competitive, his experience has led him to feel 'If you want something done right, you have to do it yourself'. He hasn't led a terribly remarkable life up to this point, going through school with good grades and getting into a respectable University. He's also fairly nonviolent, and will try to avoid fighting, which he isn't very good at.

In Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia and a big centre of commerce and research in the Asian isles, the facilty 'Encrypta Jakarta' was standing desolate and clean among the perfect lawns. Security cameras were abundant but not a single person was to be seen, not on the outside though, inside one could hear the sound:
"Bipbip bipbip bipbip ..." Went the alarm clock that Ringget had put on the bedside table. As sudden the annoying metallic noise stopped, you could hear the plastic frame of the clock moaning beneath the weight of Ringget's big hand.
These were the moments he'd wish he'd have a hammer. He turned under his sheets and wiped the sleep from his half open eyes. Stepping out of the bed his feet touched the cold stone tiles and in reflex pulled themselves back up, waiting for shoes to keep them warm.
He hated sleeping in the research centre, there was hardly any warm water at morning and they ‘forgot’ to turn the heating on at mornings. As he looked in the mirror, a pale and weary face was staring back at him, willing him to look down at the cold sink where his toothbrush was already awaiting usage.
Washing took him ten minutes and dressing another five. He was eager to go to the laboratory, the warm laboratory in particular. He walked in the door of the lab and held his hand above his brow to avert the light from his eyes. The curtains were drawn back and the light was breaking in, illuminating every flat surface around the lab.
Unconsciously his feet walked him over to the piece of parchment that was kept from the acidic air and oxygen, to keep it from decomposing. He let his eyes wander the sheet like every morning after a night of futile searching for a solution to the cryptic riddles. His eyes would read Latin, Greek, Chinese and Hebrew like it were English, but these words were no language in particular it seemed.

Loracius hadn't slept at all. Every minute of the last 24 hours he had spent searching for order.
Patterns, combinations, secrets flowed before his eyes, only to be broken by the harsh reality of the complexity of the scroll.
His eyes were raw with exhaustion. His mind was dead. But still he gazed into the nonsense and gibberish of the scroll. He sought a harmony he knew was there.
But he could not fight the power of tiredness and he dazed off for several minutes.
He awoke to find Riggnet with the scroll. Yawning he asked,
Any insights?
I had one about the first paragraph. I think it's a direct encryption. Basically letters have been swapped with each other. If that's the case we can start by identifying the most common one, which should be "e". From there we might be able to work out a few others.

Seeing Loracius with his tired eyes, he waves him hallo and hears his question and reason.
"Yes, I've been thinking the same thing, but I can't wonder if there would not be a pattern in it? Maybe even a simple one. Have you tried the box yet?"
Okay, I'm willing to 1. help you get along when you really can't get it and 2. give you tips once in a while, but I also want it to be fun, so don't post the answers here, just PM them to me and such and I'll reply on them.
Remember, I can also derail the 'investigation' if it goes too quickly so you'll have to be watchful .

You mean the box of he who Brutus slayed? I have not. That encryption of the ancestors may be the key! Genius Ringget! We're Geniuses!
I'll need some documents from the library. The proceedure is complex. I shall return shortly.

*Meanwhile, Solar is walking down a road leading to Jakarta, when 2 men with knives stand in front of him, and they block his path...* *They look like beggars, but they seem to want to be rid of that status rather fast...* *One of the men speaks in terrible english... Hand over tha monee chump! Or we'll cut you! *Solar laughs, and angered, the two attack Solar...* *But they are terrible fighters, for even as they try to pierce Solar with their knives, he has his sword raised, and runs past them before they can react* *As they turn, one of them is hit by the blunt side of Solar's sword, and he's smashed away, unconscious* *The other man stares shocked at his companion, before his face too meets the blunt side of the sword...* *Solar quickly looks whether they have any valuables, and takes two small bags of gold with him...* Hehe... Fools... *Then he sees a horde of beggars running towards him, to take revenge for their unconscious brethren...* Oops... *Runs down the road, and as he spots a large building, he decides to run to it, slowly getting out of sight of the beggars...*

"Indeed, you better search up the entire method, i'm not sure on how I have to handle this, but I know that I have to count the letters, I'm on it!
1, 2, 3, 4, ..." You hear Ringget(: all this spelling please I know I was very inconsequential myself, but i'm keeping it this .
"Oh my, there's only 115 letters, that's weird." He says looking puzzled.
